I was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana and as a child I was very interested in the human body and disease processes. During my second year in college, I started noticing loss of pigment on my lower arm. I was later diagnosed with vitiligo which is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the cells that produce skin pigment. I was told the disease most likely would progress and there is no known cure. My skin condition continued to worsen during stressful periods of my life; during medical school and my internal medicine residency, I would have large areas of color loss despite treatment with topical steroids and ultraviolet light. By the time I finished my residency program, I lost approximately 50 percent of my normal skin color; but in 2018 I started to lose skin color at a drastic pace.
By the end of 2019 most of my original skin color had been destroyed. My husband wanted to help me understand why my condition had progressed so quickly, therefore he asked me to watch a video of a woman who healed her vitiligo by copper supplementation. This video really sparked my interest in the possibility of a cure for vitiligo and led me to the study of functional medicine. As a result of applying functional medicine principles, I found that inflammation and specific nutrient deficiencies were the root cause of my skin condition. Over a period of 5 months, I was able to restore over 50% of my skin color with lifestyle changes, nutrient supplementation and ultraviolet light treatment, And as a bonus, I lost over 30lbs and had improved energy and mental clarity. As I continue on this journey, I continue to regain color and vitality with an ultimate goal of complete restoration of my original skin color.
The practice of functional medicine has now become my passion and I am committed to help those who are willing to break free from chronic illness and live a healthier and more fulfilled life.
